Ryle's tube is a disposable polyvinyl chloride tube used for both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. It is mainly used for feeding in patients with lower cranial nerve palsies, in unconscious patients and in patients with PEM. It is also used for doing gastric lavage in cases of poisoning.

What is Ryle's tube and what is it used for?
Ryles Tube is designed to provide access to nasogastric tract for introduction of nutrition and aspiration of intestinal secretion. The main use of a Nasogastric tube is for feeding and for administering drugs and other oral agents.

How long can a ryles tube stay in?
The use of a nasogastric tube is suitable for enteral feeding for up to six weeks. Polyurethane or silicone feeding tubes are unaffected by gastric acid and can therefore remain in the stomach for a longer period than PVC tubes, which can only be used for up to two weeks.
